Talk about a 'backhanded' compliment!The Turkish Islamists hell-bent on a jihad mission for the sole purpose of inflicting a 'PR death-blow' to Israel and succeeding,- that is not what they saw. The Guardian didn't believe the Israelis,- oh no, they were simply using spin tactics, because of course they must have been in the wrong! After all, they were simply "peace activists", unarmed, peaceful, civilians, 'massacred'! What nonsense,- ne matter what the u-tube videos show,- they won't believe "those Jews",- only "those peaceful Islamists" from Erdogan's 'peaceful' nation of Turkey! Sadly, Turkey was,- but it no longer is!

Where are the protests? Barry Cohen

ON May 18 last year the long, bitter war between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government came to an end. After tens of thousands of deaths over decades, it is believed, 40,000 Tamils died during the final few days.
On January 17 this year, in Nigeria, about 300 Muslims were slaughtered by Christians. In March 500 Christians were slaughtered by Muslims. On March 26, North Korea torpedoed a South Korean ship, killing 46.
On May 28, in Lahore, Pakistan, 95 members of the Ahmedi Islamic sect were killed in an attack on a mosque because they were blasphemous. A few days later six "police" machine-gunned the survivors, killing 12.
Detailed lists of this year's suicide bombings in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India are not available, but readers will be aware that barely a week passes without suicide bombers causing the deaths of hundreds of innocent families. It has been one continuous slaughter for almost a decade. Then there were the hundreds massacred after last year's Iranian elections and the 400,000 killed in Darfur in recent years.
The question that comes to mind is, did anyone notice? Most of these massacres received only a cursory glance from the media but few asked questions. Nobody demanded an independent inquiry.
There was some tut-tutting but little else. Where were the demonstrations, protests, marches and letters to the editor by those compassionate souls who demonstrate whenever brutal Western regimes commit an action of which they disapprove? They were nowhere to be seen.
Which brings us to Gaza, and the flotilla of "peace activists" who we had known for weeks would attempt to break the Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza.
A little background is essential. Israel had no desire to run Gaza. It wanted to get out and let the Gazans run it themselves, which is what Ariel Sharon did in 2005.
In the election that followed, Hamas, committed to the destruction of Israel and the killing of all Jews, won comfortably. They consolidated their position with open warfare with Fatah and about 2000 Palestinians were killed. If they'd do that to fellow Palestinians, imagine the fate of Israelis.
Having established a brutal totalitarian regime, they concentrated their efforts to bring about peace by firing 7000 rockets into Israel, killing 20 Israelis. The inaccuracy of the rockets was little consolation for those who, daily, had rockets whistling over their heads. Finally, Israel decided it had had enough. Hence Operation Cast Lead resulting in 1300 Gazans and 13 Israelis killed.
Those who had remained silent as thousands of rockets were lobbed into Israel suddenly crawled out from under their rocks screaming "disproportionate". Some of us had the bad manners to remind them that "disproportionate", had rarely been used during World War II when the Americans bombed Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Allies flattened Germany, killing 670,000. Not much proportionality there.
Israel decided not to reoccupy Gaza but to ensure that it did not become a repository for rockets and more sophisticated missiles being smuggled in from Iran and Syria. They placed a blockade on Gaza to ensure that any humanitarian aid came through Ashdod (Israel) or El Arish (Egypt). Hamas did not take kindly to these restrictions, which brings us to the "peace flotilla."As the story unfolded it became clear that Israel's chief mistake was to assume that the flotilla's main goal was to deliver humanitarian aid and that those on the six ships were genuine peace activists caring only for the plight of the Palestinians. Some were, but there was no shortage of thugs spoiling for a fight on the lead boat, the Mavi Marmara.
Flotilla organisers had been told that if they wanted aid to reach Gazans they should go through Ashdod or El Arish. One, Greta Berlin, admitted the flotilla's aim was to break the blockade.
Much of the media went into overdrive to condemn Israel, with the loudest cries screaming that the blockade was illegal. Those with a knowledge of maritime law said this was nonsense, recounting the American blockade of Nazi Germany and Japan and president John Kennedy's blockade of Cuba during the October 1962 missile crisis. Israel has already stopped hundreds of tonnes of guns and missiles from entering Gaza.
What was uncharacteristic was for the Israelis to believe that they were dealing with followers of Gandhi. If not, why had they chosen as their weapon of choice paintball guns? Let me run that past you again; paintball guns. The miracle is that no Israelis were killed. They were, however, brutally beaten with iron bars. Naturally the usual suspects in the left-liberal media screamed "disproportionate". What should the Israelis have done? Allowed themselves to be beaten to death or brought out their Monopoly boards?
Israel's critics forget that Hamas is at war with Israel. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. But the prize for the hypocrite of the century must surely go to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He accused Israel of "state terrorism, a bloody massacre" and called the attack as being "like 9/11 for Turkey". That is obscene! All this is a bit rich coming from a country that refuses to acknowledge or have an inquiry into the alleged genocide of one million Armenians during World War I.
Nor did he mention the nonstop war between Turkey and its Kurdish minority that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of the latter.
Israel is not perfect and it makes mistakes but it is not alone. When it does the wrong thing it deserves to be criticised. Anyone who reads the Israeli press would be aware that its severest critics are in Israel. Criticise Israel, by all means, but spare us from the hypocrisy of those whose hands are 100 times more bloodied.

It's open season on Israel! (Shmuley Boteach)
[Like Shmuel Boteach below, I too am astounded at the way Israel is hounded by not only the usual suspects for their own ends,- but also by some of the upper classes in the Anglo world,the elites, both Jews and non-Jews!'Baiting the Jew'used to be a regular sport in anti-Semitic Europe pre-WW2. Now it's 'baiting the Jewish State',- except that while the 'galut' Jew of the past would cower in fear, the Jewish State of Israel today, just fights back! Some 'galut' Jews and even some Israelis are still cowering,- in embarrassment, but not in fear,- at least not in the West.
When Israel takes actions to defend itself, it is turned against it in the media and with the help of those upholders of human rights and democratic values in the Islamic world,like Hamas et al. plus their useful idiots amongst us,- they are trying to deligitimize Israel. Little do they know that most of the time, Jews are more likely to be 'killed by kindness' than by hate. We are a stiff-necked people in the face of adversity and Israel proves it to the world!

The Jews who were murdered in Germany and Poland cannot speak out. The rest of us, however, have absolutely no excuse.
Helen Thomas’s stomach-turning comments about the Jews returning to Germany and Poland, where six million were killed, are striking for their racism and insensitivity. Whether she said them out of senility or anti-Semitism is beside the point. Either way she has no business working for any respectable media organization or sitting as the senior White House correspondent directly in front of the president of the United States. When Don Imus made racially charged statements against a woman’s basketball team, candidate Barack Obama demanded he be fired. It will be interesting to see how President Obama, who could not offer a single word of support for Israel since the flotilla affair, will react.
One can only imagine the uproar against Thomas had she said that all blacks should go home to Africa, or illegal immigrants to Tijuana. It seems that Jews are the only group that you can attack with impunity, because they are the only ones unwise enough to tolerate it. Better yet, we’re the only group often filled with so much self-loathing that we actually initiate many of the attacks.
FEW OF us are surprised that it is a coterie of Jewish advisers to Obama who have joined him in condemnations of Israel over Jews building in Jerusalem. This week The New York Times published an article by Michael Chabon arguing that many Jews are “blockheads” and notions of Jewish intelligence are highly overrated. He may be correct. But as I read this strange screed from one of America’s most celebrated Jewish novelists, I wondered if, say, Maya Angelou would ever pen an article about how many black dumbbells there are. Attacks on one’s own seems to be an art form perfected specifically by Jews.
Helene Cooper wrote a column in the Times asking whether Israel has become a strategic liability to the US. She quoted many senior Jewish political advisers to the Democratic Party who advised that if Israel continues to embarrass the US, it might be time for the superpower to distance itself from the little Jewish irritant.
The criticism made for interesting reading, implying as it did that while Israel is an embarrassment to the US, its relationship with such great human rights exemplars as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey ought to be sources of downright pride.
Turkey merits special mention because not only does its media accuse the American military of harvesting organs from helpless Iraqis, which they cite as one of the reasons for the American invasion, but because Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sees fit to call Israel barbarous, lecture Jews about not murdering and refers to Hamas as freedom fighters. Curiously, at the same time he was spewing his venom toward the Jewish state this past week, the pope was in Cyprus where he was being publicly begged by Archbishop Chrysostomos II, the leader of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, to stop the illegal Turkish occupation of Cyprus, now in its 34th year, and protect Christians from growing attacks by Turks.
Just prior to the pope’s visit, a Christian bishop had been stabbed to death outside his home in the port of Iskenderun. The archbishop said that Turkey had “barbarously invaded” Cyprus and “continues to carry out its obscure plan, which includes the annexation of the lands now under military occupation and then conquest of the whole of Cyprus. They wish to make everything Greek and Christian disappear from occupied Cyprus.” Of course, Turkey won’t even acknowledge its genocide of the Armenians, a position that Obama has shamefully supported in order not to offend Turkey’s belligerent leader.
Of course, Cooper’s article quotes J Street head Jeremy Ben-Ami whom journalists have come to appreciate because of his consistency and reliability in always saying something disparaging about Israel. In this case he is quoted as saying “he represents Jews who... are raising the issue of Israeli government actions as a strategic liability for the United States.”
I LIVED in England for 11 years and was sickened by the regular abandonment of Israel by some of the most high-profile Anglo-Jews whenever Israel’s actions became controversial. For those wondering why a floodgate of anti-Semitism has opened in Britain over the last few years, look no further than the fact that Israel’s greatest haters can often point to Jewish critics as being much more strident than them. And still it continues, with even high profile Jewish leaders like Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks remaining mum on Israel even while it was assailed by countless countries for enforcing a blockade against a terror organization that has fired 10,000 rockets against it.
Still, I never believed that American Jewry would emulate this cowardice. But Obama’s public abandonment of Israel is directly traceable to the small price he pays among American Jews. On my radio show, many callers contend that Obama is an anti-Semite. I condemn such character assassination in the strongest possible terms. Obama has elevated Jews to some of the highest positions, including his most recent nominee for the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan.
Rather, the president’s inability to condemn Hamas and support Israel, which is a stain on his presidency, results from his considerable moral confusion and a misguided sense of right and wrong. Under Obama, America has retreated substantially from president George W. Bush’s policies of promoting democracy and human rights and has reverted to Kissingerian realpolitik, ready to make deals with tyrants so long as it promotes an artificial sense of peace.
But Obama can get away with it because American Jewry has become so silent and so weak.
Whenever Israel undertakes controversial action, American Jews begin writing op-eds in The Atlantic and The New Yorker about how the oncemoral nation has lost its way. Funny how those same writers do not condemn Obama’s policy of Predator drone strikes against Taliban leaders that inevitably involve considerable civilian casualties.
Sorry guys. Israel is going to remain controversial, as one might expect from any country under a constant existential assault from nearly all its neighbors. When threatened by Hitler, Britain leveled whole German cities. The US did the same to the Japanese. Israel has never even pondered such actions, even as thousands of its citizens have been blown to smithereens.

SPARE me the pathetic preaching of the pro-Palestinian "peace activists" and their Western propagandists. It is now obvious that the goal of a number of those stupid enough to attempt to breach the Israeli blockade was martyrdom not the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In the previous 24 hours, the wife of Ali Haydar Bengi, one of the nine killed when they confronted Israeli commandos boarding the MV Mavi Marmara, said he "constantly prayed to become a martyr", according to a report in The Times of London. A friend of Bengi's, Sabir Ceylan, confirmed this, saying that "before embarking on the journey, he said he desired to become a martyr".
One of the late Mr Bengi's shipmates aboard the Turkish-flagged ship was the one-armed Amin Abou Rashed. He was formerly a Palestinian national but is now the happy owner of a Dutch passport.
Mr Rashed is known to be a senior official in the Hamas terrorist organisation.
He is also listed on the official website of the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement for international Islamic domination as one of the organisers of the martyrs' "Let's Go to Gaza" cruise.
The so-called Free Gaza Movement, another of the organisers of this ill-fated cruise, has its roots in the International Solidarity Movement.
This is yet another radical pro-Palestinian organisation that advocates what is euphemistically known as "direct action" in support of its destructive goals.
In 2003, the late American ISM activist Rachel Corrie - a foe of both Israel and her own homeland - applied a form of direct action when she misguidedly decided to kneel directly in front of an armoured Israeli bulldozer.
The bulldozer was engaged in searches for hidden tunnels at the time. Sadly for Corrie, she placed herself in a position where she could not be seen by the Caterpillar's operator.
She is remembered today for the futility of her gesture.
Greta Berlin, the group's 69-year-old co-founder and spokeswoman, agrees with Hamas that Israel has no right to exist.
However, she justifies her view as being part of a larger philosophy that is opposed to all national borders.
While there have been the usual raging anti-Israel demonstrations staged by Islamist sympathisers here and elsewhere, their case has been totally undermined by the videos now circulating.
These show activists aboard the Turkish-flagged Marmara chanting radical Islamic slogans before the clash. The circulation of those videos has done a great deal to take the sting out of this story for open-minded viewers.
Dr Abd Al-Fatah Shayyeq Naaman, a lecturer in Shariah law at a university in Yemen, also indicated that the Islamist violence was premeditated.
He told an interviewer: "The [Gaza] flotilla commander said: 'We will not allow the Zionists to get near us and we will use resistance against them.
They will resist with their fingernails. They are people who seek martyrdom for Allah, as much as they want to reach Gaza, but the first [martyrdom] is more desirable." In Western cultures, there is a saying: "Be careful what you wish for."
But when you belong to an insane Islamist death cult that worships martyrdom and preaches it to kindergarten-aged children, as the Palestinian Authority does through its bizarre television network, wishing for death is seen as a rewarding pursuit.
It was interesting to watch the angst-ridden faces of Western newsreaders conveying urgent updates on the fate of the useful idiots who lent their presence to this terrorist-sponsored cruise of the Mediterranean. It was dramatically apparent that these talking heads had no idea at all that the blockade on the importation of weapons and certain dual-use items into the Gaza Strip is imposed by both Israel and Egypt.
Among this concerned crowd, it doesn't seem to have sunk in yet that there have been no reports of riots outside Egyptian embassies.
Nor do the public hand-wringers seem to understand that Israel has permitted about 2000 tonnes of humanitarian goods per day to flow into Gaza, along with access to medical care, power, and funds for the army of NGOs and the salaries of those working for the Palestinian Authority.
The flotilla was carrying the equivalent of five days' supply of goods. In return, more than 1000 rockets, smuggled in through tunnels from Egypt, were launched from the Gaza Strip by Hamas at Israel where the targeted population is commonly given just a 45-second warning to seek shelter.
The pro-Palestinian lobby is working overtime to tug at the heartstrings of the guilt-ridden middle classes to suggest that the blockade is creating critical shortages of food in Gaza. But just last week Financial Times reporter Tobias Buck wrote from Rafah that the volumes conveyed through tunnel smuggling are such that: "[The] prices of many smuggled goods have fallen in recent months, thanks to a supply glut that is on striking displays across the [Gaza] Strip."
The tunnel smuggling, he wrote, had "become so efficient that shops all over Gaza are bursting with goods. Branded products such as Coca-Cola, Nescafe, Snickers [chocolate bars] and Heinz ketchup - long absent as a result of the Israeli blockade - are both cheap and widely available."
No doubt the merchants were further outraged by the efforts of the "peace"
flotilla to further undercut the prices in the souk. Before and during their provocative cruise, the Islamist flotilla organisers were offered the opportunity to offload their cargo in the port of Ashdod and hand it over to the UN for delivery to Gaza.
While this would have ensured the cargo reached its destination safely and expeditiously, it would not have helped those who were seeking martyrdom.
It would also have relieved them of the dozens of knives, Molotov cocktails, detonators, metal pipes, clubs, slingshots and stones, large hammers, wrenches, sharp metal objects, gas masks and bullet proof vests that were later found - hardly the kind of equipment usually associated with charity workers.
Peeling away the layers of disinformation disseminated by the Leftist-media, there seems little dispute that the Israeli and Egyptian blockade has been largely successful. The popularity of the leadership of Hamas has fallen behind that of the Palestinian Authority and Fatah in the West Bank.
It is impossible to see how Hamas can be regarded as anything but a barbaric terrorist organisation while it maintains its core belief that the independent state of Israel must be destroyed.
In Western culture, all loss of life is regrettable.
However, it is clear that the organisers of this week's voyage to disaster are now intending to attempt to further provoke the Israelis with another futile exercise in blockade-running in the next day or so - and possibly earn more martyrs a speedy pathway to paradise.
While ever there exist cults that prefer death to life, there will be dupes willing to buy one-way tickets to oblivion.

Supporting Islamists is a death wish!
Whenever and wherever Westerners try to support Islamic societies.- out of an inherently good conscience, whether Jewish or Christian or any other cultural or ethnic human goodwill,it always seems to backfire on them.
People's goodwill is cynically and cruelly abused by a civilization that does not value human life,- only the death and destruction of who is perceived in their culture as "the infidels"!
Having just returned from that wonderfully resourceful country of Israel, I am convinced that the Islamists,- the Hamasniks and those of their brethren in Turkey nowadays who are becoming equally Islamist,- are just jealous of the Jewish State and its successful development into a modern, technologically and economically advanced country,- in spite of all the Arabs' efforts to destabilize, deligitimize and destroy it over the few decades of its existence before and after becoming an independent State!
'How dare those "infidels" show us up',- their imams and preachers scream in their Mosques? 'Kill them and become a martyr' they incite their flocks! The stupid, the persecuted homosexuals, desperate widows, the hot-blooded single males who cannot enjoy normal sexual relationships before marriage or the women accused of adultery who would otherwise undergo "honour killings" by their fathers or brothers,- (some honour indeed!)are cruelly encouraged to become "martyrs" in support of some Islamic
concocted "cause"!
Peaceful coexistence with these people can only come by complete capitulation to the "greatest" and the "most noble ideals of Islam"!
Well,- Israel and the Jewish people are not falling for this ruse, no matter what the Islamists and their allies or the anti-Semites may wish! No one knows the Islamists better than the Israelis. No one knows better how to protect themselves and to save their country than the Israeli leadership. They have their cowards as in all societies as well as their heroes,- we diaspora Jewry have our own cowards in the world as well,- and there are those who are genuinely sorry for the plight of 'normal' Muslim Arabs and Palestinians who are caught in the Islamists' clutches.
But until the world will wake up to the fact that the Jews are no longer there to be any one or more countries' scapegoats,- i.e those who follow the Hamas-Hitzbullah-Al Queda- Iran- Taliban line of the Islamic 'axis of evil',- Israel will do whatever it needs to do to survive and overcome everything that is thrown at it!

Darwish was born in Cairo and spent her childhood in Egypt and Gaza before immigrating to America in 1978, when she was eight years old. Her father died while leading covert attacks on Israel . He was a high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed with his family in Gaza. When he died, he was considered a "shahid," a martyr for jihad. His posthumous status earned Nonie and her family an elevated position in Muslim society.
But Darwish developed a sceptical eye at an early age. She questioned her own Muslim culture and upbringing.. She converted to Christianity after hearing a Christian preacher on television.
In her latest book, Darwish warns about creeping Sharia law - what it is, what it means, and how it is manifested in Islamic countries.
For the West, she says radical Islamists are working to impose Sharia on the world. If that happens, Western civilization will be destroyed. Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual. Islamic law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in this world. Peace and prosperity for one's children is not as important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle East and eventually in the world.
While Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the golden rule, Sharia teaches two systems of ethics - one for Muslims and another for non-Muslims. Building on tribal practices of the seventh century, Sharia encourages the side of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others.
While Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a personal understanding of and relationship with God, Sharia advocates executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted as criticism.
It's hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be executed. Sadly, while talk of an Islamic reformation is common and even assumed by many in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through intimidation.
